Academic Intervention Services

Shen Student Supports

Shenendehowa provides a vast array of services to meet the unique and varied needs of students as they progress through their K-12 educational program. The Shenendehowa Student Support Plan (BOE8150P)is designed to be flexible and responsive, recognizing that student needs are often complex and students may benefit from overlapping services at various points in their development.

Tier 1 represents the central role of a quality academic program for all students. Additional services are available to students based on needs.

Academic Intervention Services (AIS)

New York State mandates that all public school districts offer Academic Intervention Services (AIS) to students falling behind in meeting the state standards. New York State has established specific levels for proficiency (cut scores) and students falling below these scores are eligible to receive AIS in the designated subject area.

Multi-Tier Systems of Support (MTSS)

MTSS is a framework that provides high-quality, evidence-based instruction and interventions to all students. It involves a systematic, multi-level approach to support struggling learners. The instruction and interventions are matched to students' specific needs, and progress is continuously monitored. Data from ongoing assessments inform instructional decisions and adjustments.

What are the Potential Benefits of MTSS?

  • Ensures a collaborative approach among educators, families, and communities to address the diverse needs of students.
  • Emphasizes family involvement, recognizing parents and guardians as vital partners in the process.
  • Eliminates the "wait-to-fail" situation by providing students with timely support and interventions within the general education setting.
  • Helps to reduce the number of students referred for special education services by providing proactive, early support, and increases the number of students who are successful in the general education classroom.
  • Helps distinguish the root cause of learning challenges by using a data-driven process.
  • Provides more instructionally relevant information than traditional assessments through the use of continuous progress monitoring.
